Foundations of the Path
Orientation
NOTEBOOK
To guide this journey, I look to four principles that have long anchored my aesthetic foundation. While their origins lie in the ancient traditions of the tea ceremony and incense appreciation, they feel remarkably vital for our lives today. They are not rigid rules, but orientations for how we might live and work with greater awareness.
Harmony is the art of balance. It is the dialogue between a scent and the space it enters, ensuring that what we introduce supports the atmosphere rather than dominating it. It asks us to consider how a fragrance meets the light, the air, and the existing character of a place – whether that space is real or imagined.
Respect is the care we take in each step. It honours the living origins of our botanicals and the landscapes they come from. By listening to a material’s unique character before we begin to work, we acknowledge its nature and its history.
Purity is the discipline of clarity – of the workspace, the gesture, and the intention. It begins with an orderly environment and a clear mind, removing unnecessary noise so that the honest character of a composition can breathe.
Tranquillity is the resonance of these efforts. It is a state of equilibrium that arises when everything is in balance. In this practice, we do not compose merely for the senses, but to reach a depth of presence where the mind is settled enough to perceive the "voice within."
